Excess weight carried underneath the chin, typically between the chin and neck.
What is it?
A double chin, clinically referred to as submental fat, occurs when a layer of fat accumulates beneath the chin and jawline. This condition is often linked with weight gain, but it is not exclusive to overweight people. Additional contributors to its onset include genetics, aging, or poor posture that weakens neck and chin muscles, causing the skin to lose its elasticity and fail to bounce back, leading to a double chin formation.
How is it treated?
Our dermatologists can provide various treatments for a double chin. Non-invasive treatments such as injectable deoxycholic acid, which destroys fat cells, may be employed. The dermatologist can also recommend laser procedures, liposuction or surgical neck lift based on the patient's preferences and medical requirements.
Your first step in managing and minimizing the appearance of a double chin is to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified providers in Farmington Hills, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Warren and St. Claire Shores, Michigan.
