A surgery involving cutting away thin layers of the skin to look for signs of — or to treat — skin cancer. This micrographic surgery has a high cure rate and minimizes damage to healthy skin.
What is it?
Mohs procedure is the most efficient method for addressing prevalent non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. Due to its high efficacy, Mohs procedure is mainly endorsed for patients with high-risk skin cancers which are typically found on the nose, eyelids, lips, ears, hands, feet and genitals. This operation eradicates the cancerous cells while preserving healthy tissue, resulting in minimal scarring. Once the cells and affected tissue layers are extracted, a pathologist will examine them in a laboratory. What sets Mohs surgery apart from excisional surgery is its staged approach, with lab testing conducted in-house.
What to expect
The proficient surgeons at Midwest are fellowship-trained in Mohs surgery and bring years of expertise to our practices. Detroit's Hour Magazine regularly honors our Mohs surgeons with the esteemed “Top Doc” award. We provide this specialized surgical service in Farmington Hills, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Warren and St. Claire Shores, Michigan.
During Mohs surgery, our fellowship-trained surgeons meticulously remove skin cancer layer by layer and examine removed cells under a microscope to ensure no cancerous cells remain. This careful process eliminates threatening cancer cells while preserving healthy tissue, minimizing scarring.
Before surgery, we typically apply local anesthesia directly to your skin to minimize discomfort during the procedure. It is common to experience swelling, bruising and discomfort following the procedure. Patients can successfully manage post-surgical symptoms with pain medication and proper wound care. It is common to have follow-up appointments to monitor healing.
