A common sexually transmitted infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) affecting the genital area.
What is it?
Genital warts are a form of sexually transmitted disease (STD) induced by specific strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). They usually show up as tiny, flesh-colored bumps or clusters within the genital region, although they might not be instantly noticeable. Genital warts are prevalent and impact all genders. Despite their location and potentially-alarming appearance, genital warts are typically harmless and do not progress into cancer. For some patients, genital warts cause discomfort, or pain, and sometimes lead to complications during pregnancy.
Genital warts usually disappear on their own after five to ten days because the immune system can fight off the infection. However, once the virus has entered your system, it stays forever (even after the warts are gone). At Midwest, we offer a variety of treatment options for persistent or bothersome genital warts.
How is it treated?
Our board-certified practioners can remove genital warts through cryotherapy, laser treatment, topical skin medication that can be applied directly to warts and—in more severe cases—surgical removal. Removing genital warts helps lower the risk of spreading the virus and can relieve any pain or itching. In addition to providing treatment, we can offer advice on prevention techniques, like HPV vaccination, and provide guidance on minimizing the risk of transmitting the condition to partners. If you believe you have genital warts, our board-certified providers can support with diagnosis and treatment. Our dermatologists in Farmington Hills, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Warren and St. Claire Shores, Michigan, are ready to help.
