Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious auto-immune skin disease characterized by patches of abnormal red, pink or purple skin and dry, itchy skin.
What is it?
Psoriasis is a skin condition caused by an auto-immune response, resulting in skin cells reproducing faster than average. This leads to chronic skin inflammation. Those affected by psoriasis often exhibit symptoms such as red, inflamed patches of skin covered with thick, white-silver scales. These patches frequently cause itching, a burning sensation and discomfort. The skin around these patches usually becomes dry, with the potential to crack and bleed. Swollen, stiff joints are also a common symptom of psoriasis.
Psoriasis is not contagious and cannot be transferred between individuals. Symptoms can fluctuate and go through cycles lasting several days to weeks. Psoriasis tends to be a chronic condition and can be very challenging to manage on your own.
How is it treated?
While there's currently no total cure for psoriasis, our accredited dermatologists can assist in managing your psoriasis symptoms with surface treatments like corticosteroids and oral retinoids. Our team may also propose soothing therapies including salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids or even aloe vera.
We may suggest and carry out light/phototherapy to alleviate discomfort in specific instances. For more intense cases, we can also prescribe oral or injectable drugs that help suppress the root cause of psoriasis in your immune system. These unique approaches to care are available in our Farmington Hills, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Warren and St. Claire Shores, Michigan locations.
