An infection resulting from a fungus (yeast or mold) that typically affects the skin, hair, nails or mucous membranes when the immune system is weakened or environmental changes occur.
What is it?
Fungal infections such as ringworm, yeast infections, jock itch, nail fungi or athlete's foot occur when an unwelcome fungus invades our skin, hair or nails. They can also appear in the mouth, throat, lungs, urinary tract, and other body areas. Moisture-retaining or friction-heavy areas are particularly susceptible. While anyone can be affected, individuals with compromised immune systems, poor circulation, or conditions like diabetes, are at higher risk. Symptoms include skin changes, rashes, cracking, itching, redness, inflammation, or bumps.
Fungal infections tend to respond well to the correct, targeted treatment. If suspect you may have a skin infection, schedule with one of our board-certified providers in Farmington Hills, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Warren and St. Claire Shores, Michigan.
How is it treated?
There are many types of fungal infections so it's important to get them assessed by our board-certified dermatologists if it doesn't clear up on its own. Our providers can diagnose your specific infection to ensure you get the right treatment. Treatment typically involves antifungal medication, which can be topical (applied to skin) or systemic (ingested orally or injected). These medications treat the infection by killing or stopping the fungus growth in your body. In severe or persistent scenarios, a referral may be issued for further specialized attention.
