Seborrheic Dermatitis

A common skin condition that primarily affects the scalp but can also appear on the face, chest and back.

What is it?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a prevalent skin disorder distinguished by red, scaly, itchy and flaking skin, mainly on the scalp, but it may also impact other greasy body parts like the face, chest and back. It's a persistent condition, and the root cause remains unclear. However, it's supposed to be linked to a yeast named Malassezia that resides on the skin or an inflammatory reaction associated with the oil-rich skin. The symptoms often vary in severity and may temporarily disappear, only reappearing later. While the condition isn't typically harmful, it can be distressing and may lead to feelings of self-consciousness or embarrassment.

How is it treated?

While there, unfortunately, isn’t a cure for seborrheic dermatitis, our team at the Midwest Center for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center can effectively diagnose and treat your condition with medicated shampoos to help alleviate symptoms like itching and lessen and/or clear the rash entirely. We can also apply a prescription-strength corticosteroid cream, foam, ointment or oil on the scalp or affected areas. With seborrheic dermatitis, it’s recommended that treatment is received as soon as possible to avoid thickening of the scale or potential infection.

Our team of providers have years of experience managing this condition and providing relief to our patients. We understand that each patient is unique and tailor our treatment plans to suit individual needs.  Conveniently located in Farmington Hills, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Warren and St. Claire Shores, Michigan, we're here to help manage your seborrheic dermatitis and improve your skin health. Visit us and experience our patient-focused approach to dermatology.
