A scar is a result of the body's healing response and replacing lost or damaged skin. Scars may be formed for many different reasons, including as a result of infections, surgery, injuries, or inflammation of tissue.
What is it?
When a wound is in the healing process, your body generates a layer of collagen to cover the open space. The skin around the wound then expands over the collagen until the edges converge in the middle, creating the scar. At Midwest Dermatology, located in areas like Farmington Hills, Shelby Township and Clinton Township, Michigan, we provide treatment for a range of scars including hypertrophic, atrophic, keloid and contracture scars.
Before determining an appropriate treatment, our medical practice, serving areas like Warren and St. Claire Shores, Michigan, evaluates your scar to identify the type, how long you have had it, and to ensure there are no indications of other issues like skin cancer.
How is it treated?
Most scars can generally be identified through a visual skin check. Our Midwest dermatologists occasionally encounters conditions that may initially appear as a certain type of scar. To accurately determine the nature of your scar, we might perform a skin biopsy for microscopic examination in our laboratory. Once the scar has been diagnosed, we are equipped to provide treatment options including surgical scar revision, steroid injections or creams, silicone dressings or gels, laser therapy, and cryotherapy.
