Scars

A scar is a result of the body's healing response and replacing lost or damaged skin. Scars may be formed for many different reasons, including as a result of infections, surgery, injuries, or inflammation of tissue.

What is it?

When a wound is in the healing process, your body generates a layer of collagen to cover the open space. The skin around the wound then expands over the collagen until the edges converge in the middle, creating the scar. At Midwest Dermatology, located in areas like Farmington Hills, Shelby Township and Clinton Township, Michigan, we provide treatment for a range of scars including hypertrophic, atrophic, keloid and contracture scars.

  1. Hypertrophic scars are elevated from your skin, formed due to excess collagen. The raised portion remains within the confines of the original injury. These scars may appear red and slightly thick, but they may lessen as the scar matures over time.
  2. Atrophic scars are depressed rather than elevated from the skin. They occur when the skin is incapable of regenerating tissue. The most common cause of an atrophic scar is acne.
  3. A keloid scar is a chunky scar that continues to grow and stand out more than the initial scar or wound. Keloid scars can occur following an injury or skin damage such as a cut, burn, body piercing or even surgery. This enlarged, thicker scar occurs when the body overproduces collagen, a protein found throughout the body. People with darker skin are more prone to develop this type of scar. Unlike other scars, keloid scars do not fade on their own over time.
  4. Contracture scars develop when a large area of skin is damaged, for instance, from a burn. As contracture scars mature, they tighten, limiting your mobility.

Before determining an appropriate treatment, our medical practice, serving areas like Warren and St. Claire Shores, Michigan, evaluates your scar to identify the type, how long you have had it, and to ensure there are no indications of other issues like skin cancer.

How is it treated?

Most scars can generally be identified through a visual skin check. Our Midwest dermatologists occasionally encounters conditions that may initially appear as a certain type of scar. To accurately determine the nature of your scar, we might perform a skin biopsy for microscopic examination in our laboratory. Once the scar has been diagnosed, we are equipped to provide treatment options including surgical scar revision, steroid injections or creams, silicone dressings or gels, laser therapy, and cryotherapy.

You can schedule an appointment with one of our experienced practitioners in Farmington Hills, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Warren, or St. Claire Shores, Michigan for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
